The bob of a pendulum possesses its maximum potential energy when it is at the highest point of the swing. Potential energy is the energy stored in an object due to its position in a gravitational field, and in the case of a pendulum, this occurs when the bob is elevated to its maximum height. At this point, the gravitational force acting on the bob has done the maximum work to elevate it, resulting in its potential energy being at its peak.

As the bob swings down from this highest point toward the lowest point, the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, which is maximum at the lowest point. Therefore, the two states of energy are directly related to the position of the bob: maximum potential energy at the top of its swing and maximum kinetic energy at the bottom.
